1. The Unseen Threads

Serwaa’s heart raced with excitement as she navigated the chaotic hospital corridors on her way to lunch, her ear buds blasting pulsating Afrobeats. The crisp blue of her scrubs stood out against the stark white walls, a symbol of her competence and dedication to her job. This life in Maryland, far from her beloved Ghana, was everything she had ever hoped for. It was here that she had built a new life, one intertwined with Kwame, the man who held her heart and all their dreams for the future.

Serwaa was a registered nurse at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, the largest hospital in Maryland. Meanwhile, Kwame made a living as a commercial truck driver. Despite living in separate apartments within the same complex, they still found ways to spend their weekends together. Kwame’s favourite dish was Serwaa’s famous waakye with spicy fried pork, served with an ice-cold bottle of Guinness. Life was good for the couple.

Serwaa’s heart fluttered with excitement as she eagerly anticipated the weekend. It was her turn to have Kwame over at her apartment, and she couldn’t wait to spend quality time with him. As soon as she got home from work on Friday, she quickly cleaned up her place and put on her favourite lingerie.

Soon after Kwame arrived, they quickly reacquainted themselves with each other’s bodies. They made passionate love all over the apartment, their intense love for one another fueling their passion. As they lay in each other’s arms, Serwaa couldn’t help but think that this was what true happiness felt like.

They indulged in lazy mornings, binge-watched romantic movies, and enjoyed each other’s company for the rest of the weekend. Serwaa felt like she was living in a fairytale, one where her prince had finally found her.

However, amidst all the romance and blissful moments, Serwaa couldn’t help but wonder when Kwame would finally put a ring on her finger. She had been dreaming of their wedding day since the moment they met, and she wanted nothing more than to call Kwame her husband.

But every time she thought about bringing up the topic with Kwame, whether it be about marriage or their future plans together, something always held her back. Maybe it was fear of rejection or fear of losing what they already had. Whatever it was, Serwaa kept postponing the conversation until it became an unspoken understanding between them.
